Special Ed Permission Codes

Effective immediately, the following SP ED core courses no longer require permission codes for registration and are available on a first‑come, first‑served basis:

  • SP ED 2010 / 5010
  • SP ED 2011 / 5011
  • SP ED 2012 / 5012
  • SP ED 5021 / 6021
  • SP ED 5022 / 6022
  • SP ED 5030 / 6030
  • SP ED 5040 / 6040
  • SP ED 5054 / 6054
  • SP ED 6610

If a core course reaches capacity before you can register, you may place yourself on the course waitlist through CIS.

Most Specialization Year courses require permission codes to ensure students are:

  • Admitted to the appropriate SP ED specialization
  • Enrolled in coursework aligned with their approved program plan
  • Properly cleared for practicum, clinical, or field‑based placements
  • Placed in the correct cohort‑restricted sections

Permission codes are commonly required for:

  • Specialization Year methods courses
  • Practicum and field‑based courses
  • Cohort‑restricted sections
  • Courses with prerequisites not yet reflected in CIS

No student may register for SP ED Specialization Year courses without a verified USIMS Checklist PDF confirming an approved USBE Background Check clearance.

Before a permission code can be issued, students must submit a completed USIMS Checklist showing their active USBE Background Check Clearance.

Permission codes will not be issued if background clearance documentation is missing, expired, or unverified.

Once your USBE Background Check clearance is verified, submit a permission‑code request using the form below:

SP ED Permission Code Request Form:
https://educationutah.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2hLMC6HaARhpkeW

You will be asked to provide:

  • Your full name and UID
  • Course number and section
  • Specialization area
  • Semester of enrollment
  • Confirmation of a verified U SIMS Checklist

Requests are reviewed by the Department of Special Education, and permission codes are issued based on program eligibility, background clearance verification, and course availability.

Students are encouraged to complete background checks well in advance of registration, as processing time may affect enrollment eligibility.
