*COVID-19 Update 8/27/21*
Much like Fall 2020 and Spring 2021, when the Covid-19 pandemic forced U-FIT operations to go virtual, high infection rates continue to affect our programming. However, with greater emphasis placed on mask-wearing and the wide availability of vaccines, we are pleased to announce a return to in-person U-FIT beginning later this Fall 2021semester. To protect our community and volunteers, U-FIT programming will operate at a reduced capacity, with two subprograms—UDance and USwim—to be offered separately (but still at the same time) to prevent larger congregations of families and volunteers in any one area. We also strongly encourage our greater U-FIT community—families, participants, volunteers, staff—to receive the vaccine, if eligible, and to practice mask-wearing when participating in U-FIT related activities. Please check this website frequently as Covid-19 recommendations are constantly evolving, which may influence U-FIT.
On September 3, 2021, we will post more information about UDance and USwim, along with registration forms for both families and university volunteers. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out to us using the contact information at the bottom of the page.
Stay safe, we look forward to seeing you soon.
Dr. Wesley Wilson, U-FIT Director
What is U-FIT?
U-FIT is a family-centered program designed for children and youth with special needs. We provide physical activities in a fun, noncompetitive atmosphere that will help individuals reach their goals! By working along side skilled volunteers, the program is designed to build friendships, increase self-esteem, improve motor skills and levels of physical fitness while ultimately having fun in a nurturing environment. The key to the success of the U-FIT Program is through family involvement of those who participate. U-FIT tries to meet the goals and needs of the family that is as diverse as the participant.
Who can participate in U-FIT?
Children involved in the program range in age from 3 to 18 years and have a wide variety of disabilities. Participants receive individual instruction from trained volunteers and students at the University of Utah. Siblings are also encouraged to participate and have the option of having their own volunteer for personal attention during sessions or participating in group activities.
Where and when are U-FIT activities held?
The activities are held on Friday evenings from 6pm to 8pm in HPER complex and in the HPER swimming pool. You can park in the lot just north of the HPER complex. The program follows the University academic calendar but does not meet in the summer.
