Master's Degree Admissions Information

Students must complete a minimum of 30 semester credit hours to earn a master’s degree, as required by the Graduate School at the University of Utah. Master’s programs in Special Education require more than 30 credit hours of coursework, depending on the specific degree and emphasis area.

Minimum Admission Requirements

The minimum requirements for admission to the University of Utah’s Department of Special Education include:

  • Admitted to the University as a matriculated student (working toward a degree)

Credit earned as a non-matriculated (non-degree-seeking) student does not automatically apply toward a graduate degree. After admission as a matriculated (degree-seeking) student, up to 9 semester credit hours of University of Utah graduate coursework may be considered for application toward a master’s degree (M.Ed. or M.S.), with approval from the program and the Graduate School.

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Proof of a USBE-cleared fingerprint background check

The Admissions Committee in the Department of Special Education will take a holistic approach to evaluate each applicant’s file by examining: GPA,  letters of recommendation, applicant’s personal statement, and work history.

As stipulated by the Utah State Office of Education’s ruling R277-502-3(5), the University of Utah’s Department of Special Education may waive the minimum GPA entrance requirements for no more than 10 percent of an entrance cohort based on guidelines established by the Department.
