Undergraduate Admissions Information

Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education

Preparation for Utah Basic Teaching License in Special Education in any of the following areas:  Mild/Moderate Disabilities, Severe Disabilities, Preschool/Early Intervention Special Education, Visual Impairments, Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Students complete approximately 122 semester hours of credit in order to graduate with a B.S. in Special Education through the Department of Special Education.


Minimum Admission Requirements

All Undergraduate Special Education students must first be admitted to the University of Utah as a "Matriculated"
student (a student who is working toward a degree).

In accordance with the Utah State Office of Education’s ruling R277-502-3(5), the University of Utah’s Department of Special Education has established entry requirements designed to ensure that only well-qualified individuals enter the program. Minimum requirements for admission to the University of Utah’s Department of Special Education include:

Minimum GPA of 3.0

Proof of a USBE-cleared fingerprint background check

Information for Transfer Students

The Admissions Committee in the Department of Special Education will take a holistic approach to evaluate each applicant’s file by examining: GPA,  letters of recommendation, applicant’s personal statement, and work history.

As stipulated by the Utah State Office of Education’s ruling R277-502-3(5), the University of Utah’s Department of Special Education may waive the minimum GPA entrance requirements for no more than 10 percent of an entrance cohort based on guidelines established by the Department.
